Camp NaNoWriMo Week 1 Check-In (Tip + Excerpt)

It’s officially been one week since Camp NaNoWriMo started, and I am both exhausted and super motivated! I’ve written so many words, and I am deep into my novel now. There’s no turning back!

If you don’t know what Camp NaNo (that’s what I’ll be shortening NaNoWriMo to in this post) is, it’s a special event surrounding NaNo! Well, what’s NaNo? NaNo stands for National Novel Writing Month, and it’s a challenge to write 50 thousand words in the month of November. Essentially, write a book in a month! The difference between regular NaNo and Camp, is Camp takes place in April and July, and people can choose whatever word count they want.

Me being me, I still went for the 50 thousand.

You might be asking, Makayla, what are you writing about? Oh, you didn’t ask? Well, my book another vampire novel, because apparently I can’t resist! It takes place in another world, there’s court drama, and of course a hunky bad boy. My protagonist is strong, but she questions herself, and it’s been fun to write her growth so far!

Current word count: 18,564

Yay! I’m ahead of schedule! According the Camp NaNo website, I’ll likely finish around April 19th if I continue at the pace I’m going. This gives me plenty of time to mull over my words in case I get stuck.

Mood: Ecstatic!

I’ve been in a bit of a writing slump, and when I started working on this project, I was super motivated! It’s been awhile since I’ve been able to dive this heavily into a writing project, but this one has gotten my gears going!

Currently Listening to: Danheim!

I thought it would be cool to show what I’ve been listening to. Whenever I sit down for a writing session, I turn up my Spotify and get into the zone. For this project, I’ve been listening a lot to Danheim. If you enjoy Viking and Scandinavian sounding instrumentals, this is totally for you! Every time I listen I feel like I’m going to battle with my words. Maybe I am.

A tip!

I thought I could round off this check-in by giving a little tip to maybe get you through your NaNo writing.

Resist the temptation of editing.

I know how hard that can be. Its one of the biggest things I have to remind myself to follow! I’m constantly wanting to go back within my work and edit things. When NaNo comes around, this is the first thing I tell myself. Do not edit. Editing takes away from the valuable time you could be using to get the words on the page!

Favorite line so far!

I could probably choose a plethora of lines, so this was an extremely difficult choice! I wanted to choose something that lets you into the protagonists head a bit without giving anything away.

The thing I hated the most about vampires was their uncanny ability to know someones emotions by the sound of their heart. Unfortunately for me, the hammering in my chest was the one thing about myself I wasn’t able to control.

Are you participating in Camp NaNoWriMo? How are things going so far?

Love this! Glad you’re ahead of schedule. The website says I should finish April 19th too! But I’m aiming for 30k because I failed November NaNo last year (my first attempt!) so for my first camp I’m setting a lower/more attainable goal.

Thank you! My website updated and I’m at the 16th now! 😮 Good luck! Setting your own goal can be great! Just remember, small steps lead to big victories!

That’s what I’m hoping for! As long as I keep up the momentum I have now I’ll be able to surpass my goal.

go you! I’m just getting back into original fiction so my goal is just 25k, but I’ve already fallen behind … university does have to come first though, and at least I’ll have the July session to redeem myself 😜

silencing the inner editor is so important, because I could get stuck tweaking and rewriting forever. my workaround for Camp and regular NaNo specifically has actually been to let myself occasionally change things if they’re quick fixes that catch my eye (a word here or there) and leave the original; if I really can’t resist the urge to rewrite a passage, I’ll add it in brackets under the original, so that it at least contributes to my word count, haha. but I do think it depends from person to person; for those who can’t stop at just one fix it’s definitely much better to avoid it altogether, though for me it helps scratch that itch so it’s not a constant distraction and I can move on. 😉

Thank you! That’s a good goal to have, and that’s also why I really like Camp! It lets us kind of do our own thing. Small goals go a long way in the end!

I’ll let myself go back every once in awhile to take a sentence or two, but for the most part I keep writing. Sometimes I’ll leave comments on things to look at later more in depth.

Congrats on being ahead!!!!!! 18,000 words in a week is amazing! I only have 9,000-something, but my goal is only 40,000. But I’m still only on chapter one of my novel. XD My prologue ended up being veeeerrry long for some reason. 😛
I’ve already failed the “no editing” thing. XD But in my defense I only go back and read the last paragraph or page to remember where my train of thought was going (even though I have an outline telling me what to do but shhh) and if I HAVE to edit something I make sure I reword it so it gives me more words than I had to begin with to make up for deleting anything. XD
This was a fun wrap up post to read! I’m doing weekly Nano wrap ups on my blog too if you want to know how the progress with mine is going. 🙂 https://thefrozenlibrary.wordpress.com/2019/04/07/camp-nanowrimo-progress-update-week-1/

Thank you! When I’m behind, I always remind myself any word is one more word closer!

That’s how I am with the editing. I fix maybe a few words here and there, but I don’t do whole overhauls of chapters!
